Being stressed is what people always feel especially when they’re at work. Whenever your boss tells you, “Meet me in my office,” your whole body trembles, your hearts starts beating fast and your mind begins to think all the possible outcomes when you arrive at your boss’ office.
Before we get into finding ways on how to never feel stressed, let’s understand first what is stress and what’s causing your stress.
What is Stress?
Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you sense danger—whether it’s real or imagined—the body’s defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction or the “stress response.”
The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life—giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.
Stress can also help you rise to meet challenges. It’s what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration when you’re attempting the game-winning free throw, or drives you to study for an exam when you’d rather be watching TV. But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life.
Now that you have understood what stress is, let’s proceed on how we can improve our ability to handle stress.
Improving your Ability to Handle Stress
Learn How to Relax
Relaxing is the most effective way to reduce stress. The highly recommended things you can do to relax is by doing yoga or meditational activities to relax your mind and your body. There are many other ways to relax your entire self, by going to a quiet place, by playing games, by watching your favorite TV shows. All of these can help you to reduce your stress.
Let’s go back to our first scenario, at the office. How are we going to be able to relax when we are at work? That’s a good question. I remember my co-worker saying this to me. “I’ll go out for a while to smoke.” What does it mean? It means my co-worker wanted to spend a little time for himself to chill and relax. That’s right, to reduce stress.
There are lots of things you can do to relax while you’re at the office. You just have to understand what you wanted to do. But keep in mind that you can only do these things if you’re on a break because you don’t want to get another trouble, do you? That would be another stress for you.
